Preface to 'The Mayan Letters by CHarles Olson.

For me, and my world right now (9th December 2012) Charles Olson and his book 'The Mayan Letters' makes perfect sense.

Sometime toward the end of 1950, it was in December I think, but the letter isn't dated, I heard that Charles Olson was off to Yucatan. A sudden "fluke"—the availability of some retirement money owed him from past work as a mail carrier—gave him enough for the trip, "not much but a couple of hundred, sufficient, to GO, be, THERE. . . ." By February I had got another letter, "have just this minute opened this machine in this house lerma. . . ." From that time on I heard from him regularly, and so was witness to one of the most incisive experiences ever recorded. Obviously it is very simple to call it that, that is, what then happened, and what Olson made of his surroundings and himself. Otherwise, it is necessary to remember that Olson had already been moving in this direction, back to a point of origin which would be capable of extending "history" in a new and more usable sense. In his book on Melville, Call Me Ishmael , he had made the statement, "we are the last first people . . ."; and in his poetry, most clearly in "The Kingfishers," there was constant emphasis on the need to break with the too simple westernisms of a 'greek culture.'

Yucatan made the occasion present in a way that it had not been before. The alternative to a generalizing humanism was locked, quite literally, in the people immediately around him, and the conception, that there had been and could be a civilization anterior to that which he had come from, was no longer conjecture, it was fact. He wrote me, then, "I have no doubt, say, that the American will

more and more repossess himself of the Indian past. . . . If you and I see the old deal as dead (including Confucius, say), at the same time that we admit the new is of the making of our own lives & references, yet, there is bound to be a tremendous pick-up from history other than that which has been usable as reference, the moment either that history is restored (Sumer, or, more done, Chichen or Uaxactun) or rising people (these Indians, as camposinos ripe for Communist play—as ripe as were the Chinese, date 1921, June 30). . . ." The problem was, to give form, again, to what the Maya had been—to restore the "history" which they were. For in the Maya was the looked-for content: a reality which is "wholly formal without loss of intimate spaces, with the ball still snarled, yet, with a light (and not stars) and a heat (not androgyne) which declares, the persistence of both organism and will (human). . . ."

In editing the present selection, I have tried to maintain a continuity in spite of the limits of space and the loss of some letters which it has meant. I have indicated excisions with dots ( . . .), whenever such were necessary.

Giordano Bruno was so right so long ago, yo.

The Italian priest Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake in 1600 for, among other things, imagining an infinite number of other worlds and claiming that "innumerable suns exist; innumerable earths revolve about these suns."

Modern astronomers are proving Bruno right - there really are innumerable suns with innumerable planets revolving around them.

An extrasolar planet, or exoplanet, is a planet outside our solar system. As of early September, a total of 836 exoplanets have been found. Astronomers now believe that more than half of all sunlike stars harbor at least one planet, leading to the estimate of at least 160 billion exoplanets in our own Milky Way galaxy.

the Tale of the tribe as a blueprint for Artificial General Intellgence

listening to some of the ideas and descriptions of Artificial General Intellgence, I thought that the holistic approach of combining many differemt disciplines, reflects RAW's comprehensive group of intelligence engineers in The tale of the tribe.

Joyce's Voices

For Bloomsday this year (16 June 2012) the BBC will be handing Radio 4 over to Ulysses. Throughout the day there will be readings of a special adaptation of the text, along with live broadcasts from Dublin (where fans re-enact moments from this complex book. Sadly, this may not prove accessible to all countries.

This will be an edited version, not the 'complete' text which was broadcast in 1982 (which took nearly 30 hours).

The details below are from the BBC Media Centre (without permission) which contains further information.

James Joyce had a fine singing voice and sang professionally as a young man. In James Joyce’s Playlist, David Owen Norris and guests will listen to some of Joyce’s favourite songs in the Martello Tower in Dublin where he lived for a time. This will be broadcast on Saturday, June 9th.

On Thursday, June 14th In Our Time will discuss the background to Ulysses, considering its historical and literary context, its themes, contents and style, and the impact it has had since publication. Melvyn Bragg will be joined by Steven Connor, Professor of Modern Literature and Theory at Birkbeck College, London; Jeri Johnson, Fellow and Tutor in English at Exeter College, Oxford; and Richard Brown, Reader in Modern Literature at the University of Leeds.

Orson Welles' fans push for commemorative U.S. stamp in time for centennial celebration

With the approach of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the late Orson Welles, Woodstock, Illinois, where the actor-director spent his formative years is leading the call for a U.S. postage stamp to honor the maverick filmmaker.
Woodstock Celebrates, is planning events in May 2014, marking the 80th anniversary of the Todd Theatre Festival during which Welles made his directorial debut, and in May 2015 to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Woodstock Celebrates and Wellesnet, a Welles resource website, are petitioning the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp in 2015 honoring the Orson Welles centenary. They argue that Woodstock is the proper locale for the first day issuance.
Woodstock Celebrates hopes the stamp drive and anniversary celebrations will attract Welles enthusiasts from around the United States and perhaps the globe, according to Kathleen Spaltro of Woodstock Celebrates.
“We want to reconnect Woodstock with two remarkable people in its history, Orson Welles and Roger Hill, an extraordinary educator at Todd School, who understood how to nourish creativity and foster love of learning,” Spaltro said.
At the Todd School for Boys, from 1926 to 1931, Welles met Hill, his mentor and lifelong friend. Asked as a middle-aged man who was the most important influence on his creativity, Welles replied, “Roger Hill. I think about him every day.”
Welles returned to Woodstock throughout the 1930s and 1940s – in particular for the theater festival at the Woodstock Opera House in 1934 that he organized and Hill, then headmaster, funded. There, Welles made his debut as a professional director, and he made his first venture into film in Woodstock with the 16mm short “The Hearts of Age.” In addition, Hill and Welles published the book“Everybody’s Shakespeare” in Woodstock that year.
Initial plans call for several Welles scholars to talk about his early life and career on the 80th anniversary of the 1934 Todd Theatre Festival (Tentative guests currently scheduled to speak include Joseph McBride, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Michael Dawson and Wellesnet's Lawrence French).
In May 2015, Woodstock Celebrates will throw a 100th birthday party for the late actor-director-writer. Related, concurrent events may include library and/or county historical society exhibits, screenings of Welles-related films, sales by vendors of radio and movie memorabilia, and a re-enactment of the historic 1938 radio broadcast of “The War of the Worlds.”
The issuance of a Welles commemorative postage stamp celebrating the 100th anniversary of his birth would complement Woodstock’s birthday party, organizers said.
Welles' image appeared on a U.S. stamp in 1999 in a scene from his landmark film "Citizen Kane." The 1941 film is regarded as the finest movie produced in Hollywood.
Stamp proposals must be submitted to the Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee in writing. Proposals made by e-mail will not receive a response. Subjects should be submitted at least three years in advance of the proposed date of issue to allow sufficient time for consideration and for design and production.

The question of rights in Joyce's work was a fraught one even during his lifetime. Fearing prosecution, no one would publish Ulysses complete and unabridged until Sylvia Beach, the American bookseller in Paris, bravely did so in 1922. But Joyce's notoriety attracted pirates , and at one time he was unprotected by good contracts or good law. In November 1925, he found that without his permission Ulysses was being published serially in the magazine Two Worlds by Samuel Roth, the New York pornographer. His protests went unheeded. Roth simply sent a cheque for $1000 which Joyce refused to cash.

Among his literary friends and supporters, only Ezra Pound and Bernard Shaw were unsympathetic. Pound said that Joyce had only himself to blame for not registering his copyright in America. He advised him "to write letters to the press denouncing Roth", or alternatively, "organise a gang of gunmen to scare [him] out of his pants". But Roth, he warned, was a ruthless capitalist driven by avarice, not easily stopped.

Joyce was incensed, and with the aid of friends composed a letter of protest which was circulated among writers, attacking unjust American copyright law. Pound refused to sign, as did Shaw, who suspected a Joycean stunt.

THE TWELVE (12 the book) BY William Gladstone synchronicity

While in the American bookstore on Thursday here in Amsterdam, I stumbled upon a book called THE TWELVE, I was shocked to see a book concerning the end of time, Mayan Prophecies and generally the 2012 phenomena that had a protagonist called MAX. I was a little shocked by this, in a good kind of epiphany shocked-way becasue I have a character called MAX in my new book called OUR HISTORYS BACK, which is set in 2012 and includes many of the 2012, Mayan, time-travel themes, except I am hinting at the possibility that by that date, somehow humanity has fully digested what Robert Anton Wilson might have been tryoing to tell us with his TALE OF THE TRIBE.

I have not read the book, but as a loose 2012 drum beater' I suspect I may, just to see what MAX gets up to.

Here's my latest update and interpretation of 'the tale of the tribe' is in the form of a google web-site, that I am still editing and readying for some kind of launch. Here's a recently edited rough synopsis of what I have done with some of the characters. --steve fly.

Before Dr. Robert Anton Wilson graduated life in early 2007 he shared with the world a tantalizing glimpse into an epic project that he called ‘the tale of the tribe' (TTOTT): the blueprint for a new synthesis of some of the greatest minds of the 21st century, uniting quantum mechanics, neuro-semantics, design-science, Ideogramic method, history and culture, together into a typically RAW montage' of forces and values to help others distinguish useful information from all the bullshit. The historical characters or 'evolutionists' from RAW's TTOTT krewe were individuals that helped to speed up the ability of humans to condense ideas and then share information, that has directed humanity into the - information age - and the sharing mass-age. In Our Historys Back' fly has designed an environment based in 1936 where these TTOTT characters can blend their creative genius and fall into orbit with one another; poets, linguists, logicians, design-scientists and artists meet to share their wisdom on advancing humanity into the 21st century. New creative research into the tale of the tribe aims to open up a new vista of interpretations from the fragments left to us by Dr. Wilson. And this adaptation of Dr. Wilson's 'tale of the tribe' is the first such project, to my knowledge, to tackle TTOTT lineage and place some characters into a new Novel architecture. I hope that this project will at least encourage some of you who are on a similar road of investigation and nudge-nudge - create your own TTOTT synthesis.

Our Historys Back’ features remixed 'TTOTT' characters rounded into a tale within a tale by our protagonists. The tale within a tale follows a band of old bards who journey to the 1936 Olympic Games into the sick-heart of the Nazi intelligence games to boldly state their perfected word and communicate their sporting peace to all nations on behalf of artists, painters and poets worldwide. Standing in their way are a sordid alliance of spies from many nations including English, American, German, Canadian and Soviet agents; who have arranged to meet in Berlin to finalize their annual guns, dope and intelligence 'trade off'

Max, Percy and Plush are three friends living in Amsterdam, 2012, united by their synchronistic interest in RAW's ‘tale of the tribe’ and producing their own story that includes a culture’s hierarchy of values and histories. Plush has perfected his turntable-altable method of mixing and cutting specially crafted LP’s, that contain pre-recorded samples from the 1936 tale and afterwards, together with Max and Percy, they splice the recordings into dialogue and a dramatic sequence of events. The MPHDJ Method translates roughly as mixing special kinds of sampled literature using the approach of a musical DJ or turntablist.

The 1936 tale spans 48 hours and three main locations, taking place in theatres in New York and Rapallo’ simultaneously on July 31st', and then moving to Berlin and the opening of the IXth Olympic Games on August 1st. The recurring theme of the story is probably the precept of ‘ language versus the equation’, translated into how the characters share their different fields of experience and wisdom creating a communication network, to help others bring a new peace to Europe through a linguistic relativism, a new language to help facilitate peace and communication between all nations and humanity.

Generally when people don't understand things they go for a sinister explanation, a conspiracy, a disaster - and hollywood - it's producers, screen writers, actors, media spin doctors and pundits seems to be to be at the cutting of sinister explanations, turning superstition into cinematic science; a great skill when used on behalf of humanity, not the box office, don't get me wrong, i admire the possibilities of cinema. But cinema in conjunction with history, science, language and humanity.

A 2012 movie shall be made to reflect the positive transformation possibly due around about 21st December 2012.
